Why 10GbE is the new baseline
Storage and virtualization clusters have made 10GbE the practical default. But switch selection has traps that surface only after deployment.
Pitfall 1: Ignoring buffer size
Storage traffic is bursty. A switch with small buffers drops frames under load, and your NVMe array performs far below spec.
Pitfall 2: Layer-3 needs
If you segment VLANs across multiple subnets, make sure the switch handles inter-VLAN routing at line rate.
Pitfall 3: Port density math
Count servers, then add 20% for management and growth. A 48-port unit is often the sweet spot for 30-40 servers.
Pitfall 4: Management interface
CLI + SNMP + REST API matter for automation. Consumer-grade web-only switches are a maintenance trap.
Pitfall 5: Failing to plan for DAC
Short-reach DAC cables are cheap and low-latency. Verify your switch and NIC support them before ordering.
